Metaplanet's Bitcoin-Backed Digital Credit Study in Japan (2026)

Metaplanet, Japan's largest corporate Bitcoin holder, is making waves with its ambitious plans to revolutionize the country's debt market. In a recent development, the company has embarked on a joint study with three partners to create Bitcoin-backed digital credit products, marking a significant shift from its previous focus on treasury accumulation. This move positions Metaplanet as a potential financial platform, leveraging its substantial Bitcoin holdings and strategic acquisitions.

The study involves a collaboration between Metaplanet, yen stablecoin issuer JPYC, regulated security token platform Progmat, and Siiibo Securities, a licensed brokerage acquired by Metaplanet for 2.1 billion yen. The goal is to explore the feasibility of using Bitcoin as collateral for credit instruments that pay interest daily. This concept, while existing in the US, is novel in Japan, where the debt market favors large corporations with public bonds.

Metaplanet's strategy, dubbed Project Nova, aims to bridge the gap in Japan's debt market by enabling smaller and growth companies to access credit. By combining on-chain infrastructure with blockchain rails, the company aims to streamline the process, reduce manual work, and provide a more accessible path to raising funds. This approach could potentially revolutionize how debt is raised and managed in Japan.

The partnership's division of labor is well-defined, with each partner contributing a unique piece to the puzzle. Metaplanet and its securities arm will design and distribute the Bitcoin-credit products, manage customer interactions, and oversee post-issuance operations. JPYC will facilitate payments and redemptions using its stablecoin, ensuring seamless transactions. Progmat will provide the regulated tokenization layer, handling ownership tracking and transfer processing.

Metaplanet's larger vision is to establish itself as a Bitcoin-centric financial platform in Japan. The acquisition of Siiibo, a private-placement corporate bond platform, granted Metaplanet a Type I Financial Instruments Business Operator registration, a crucial license for selling financial products to retail investors. With a substantial Bitcoin reserve and a growing shareholder base, Metaplanet is poised to make a significant impact on the Japanese financial landscape.

However, the digital credit plan is still in the exploratory phase, with many questions and uncertainties. The success of this venture depends on the proof-of-concept work and the eventual product development. Metaplanet's bold move highlights its commitment to pushing the boundaries of Bitcoin's potential in the financial sector, challenging the traditional notion of Bitcoin as a mere treasury reserve asset.
